Mr. Hatch's Website  Week of January 11th, 2010

Reading/Language Arts:  In reading, the students will finish reading the  book, Mr. Popper's Penguins.  They will complete a quiz time, picture vocab, and Unit Test. They will also be working on their individualized reading program on such topics as fluency, accuracy, summarization, expression, connections, and inferencing.  This will be done during their center time.

Spelling:  This week, the students will have spelling lists based on spelling need.  There are several different categories for spelling, so be sure to check your child's agenda for their list.

Writing:  The students will continue the Writer's Workshop program by working on telling stories from the inside out, and becoming even better listeners of writing.

Math:  This week we will continue Chapter 4.  Due to the snow day on Friday of last week, the quiz will be on Tuesday of this week.

Science:  The students will continue to focus on physical science.  They will continue work with speed, distance, and rate using the marble race activity they have been doing in class.

Social Studies:  This week the students will construct an informational map on a select group of Colonies.  This project will take all week.

Note To Parents:  This is be a busy four day week.  Monday will be set aside to catch up for the snow day last Friday.  Tuesday through Thursday will be busy moving forward in all subjects.  In reading, the students will finish Mr. Popper's Penguins.  They will also continue their guided reading groups.  Spelling will be much different this week.  The students will be split up into groups based on a placement test they took a while back.  It is designed for the students to focus on areas where the students need most help.  Look for spelling lists to come home Monday.  Their spelling will be incorporated into their guided reading centers.  We continue chapter 4 in math.  In science, the students continue to work on their marble races with an emphasis on rate, distance, time, and speed.  In social studies, the students will begin work on their informational maps of the colonies.  This will take all week.  As you can see, we are packing a lot into four days this week.
